A slip and fall in the home can sometimes impact the head or face causing you to bite down on your tongue. In some of these instances the soft tissue trauma can be significant, calling for a little basic first aid while seeking emergency treatment.
It might help to assess the severity of the damage to your tongue and mouth before contacting Oquirrh Dental. A gentle rinse of lukewarm saltwater can help clear away excess blood from your mouth. You shouldn’t rinse with antiseptic mouthwash as it could irritate the wounded oral tissues.
If your tongue is bleeding you might be able to lightly pack the area with sterile gauze and gently press it to the roof of your mouth. Taking a standard dose of an over the counter pain medication might help reduce discomfort. Gently applying a small amount of topical oral analgesic might also help numb the area.
Once you arrive at our clinic one of our dentists will examine the trauma to your tongue. Once we have assessed the severity of the problem, Dr. Troy Sargent or Dr. Michel Haynie will present you with your possible treatment options.
If you live in the Magna, Utah, area and you or someone near you has suffered a significant tongue injury, should call 801-250-0668 to seek emergency treatment at Oquirrh Dental.
